Songs That Every Child Should Know 4.1
An exile from home, splendour dazzles in vain; Oh, give me my lowly thatched cottage again; The birds singing gaily that came at my call, — Give me them with the peace of mind dearer than all. Home! home! etc.
How sweet, too, to sit 'neath a fond father's smile, And the cares of a mother to soothe and beguile; Let others delight 'mid new pleasures to roam, But give me, oh, give me! the pleasures of home! Home! home! etc.
To thee I '11 return, overburdened with care; The heart's dearest face will smile on me there; No more from that cottage again will I roam, Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home. Home! home! etc.
Italian Air
The Rev. Hobart B. Whitney has preserved this air as he heard it forty years ago, outside the window of his hotel. It was sung in a clear, ringing voice by an Italian boy (street musician), and Dr. Whitney immediately recorded it in MS. It is Santa Lucia, and is included in this collection as being beyond doubt the popular corruption of the original son^. The street-singer's version is eminently the more singable and vital and fascinating.
